Tread Lightly
What kind of world will we leave to our children and grandchildren? Is there a way to use less of the earth's finite resources?
Here are some strategies Hattie's has adopted:
- Ice cream and beverage cups are biodegradable and compostable. Instead of using plastic made from oil which is shipped halfway around the world, these cups are made from U.S.-grown corn, a renewable resource.
- Trash bags, too, are 100% compostable and biodegradable, so they won't clog landfills indefinitely.
- Spoons for soups and floats are made from potato starch and are biodegradable.
- "Green" cleaning supplies are used wherever possible.
- Paper towels and napkins are unbleached, to spare our rivers from the bleaching agents that make paper white.
Lighting. Most of Hattie's lights, whether overhead, candelabra, or track, are CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps). CFLs use 75% less energy and last ten times longer than regular incandescent bulbs. That cuts down on the use of coal- and oil-burning power plants, which in turn means cleaner air. Even our snowflake window lights are LEDs (light-emitting diodes).
We buy local products and ingredients as much as possible, to cut down on the use of fossil fuel based delivery trucks and planes.
By using organic foods (gelato, toppings, cider, coffee, cocoa, tea, etc.), we lessen the use of harmful chemicals and petroleum-based fertilizers on the earth's soils.
Hattie's recycles everything we can - bottles, clean paper, plastic wraps, boxes.
These are steps Hattie's has taken. What else can you think of?
Yes, It costs a bit more, but it's worth it!
